iWeb, terrible but great

Now, here’s my opinion on iWeb: While I don’t think any graphical web editor can ever output decent HTML just from click-click web site generation (after all, HTML was never intended to be used that way), I love iWeb. Even though it generates one of the worst output ever. Text as images? Really, it does that.

However, I am sick and tired of hand-editing HTML. I have spent years of doing things in BBEdit or DreamWeaver, I have fought the differences between table rendering in IE4 and Netscape 4, written PHP scripts and optimized GIF images. And you know what? No one will see the difference. Either a web site is good or it isn’t, and how one got there doesn’t matter. With iWeb I can quickly put a site online that is maybe not the most original (using their templates), but I prefer coming up with something decent in 30 minutes than spending an entire afternoon in a text editor. And if it saves me five hours of work, I’ll even accept text as images.
